Located at 138 Gallery in Melbourne, Joke Taxonomy by artist James Brett is a thought-provoking exhibition that explores humor, irony, and the realities of contemporary life through a series of striking works. Known for his ability to weave pop culture and philosophical undertones into his art, Brett’s work provokes both laughter and reflection.
I was commissioned to design and execute a hand-painted sign that would become a central element in Brett’s body of work for the exhibition. The aim was to create a visually impactful piece that aligned with the exhibition’s themes while reflecting the authenticity and craftsmanship inherent in traditional sign painting.
The process began with a collaborative discussion to understand Brett’s vision and the context of his work. Drawing inspiration from the exhibition’s satirical tone, I developed a bold design that complemented the humor and gravity of his message. Using traditional hand-painting techniques, the sign was meticulously crafted to ensure it resonated with the raw and intentional aesthetic of Brett’s art.
The completed piece became a focal point within Joke Taxonomy, effectively bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary artistic commentary. Visitors noted its striking presence and the way it enhanced the overall impact of the exhibition.
This collaboration was an exciting opportunity to contribute to a compelling artistic narrative. By blending humor, philosophy, and traditional techniques, the project exemplified the power of craftsmanship to amplify contemporary art.
